Right now, there’s a big race happening in the tech world, and it’s all about making the best generative AI chatbots. Five major companies are leading the way, each spending a huge amount of money to make sure their AI is the best out there. They’re all trying to outdo each other by making their AI smarter and adding cool new features.

These companies are working hard to make their chatbots really understand and respond to us better, making it easier for us to get things done without having to be tech wizards. Whether it’s answering questions, helping with work, or just making tasks simpler, these chatbots are becoming more like handy assistants.

These chatbots also the bases on which other specialized chatbots and Assistants like our AI Staff are powered.

For anyone running a small or medium-sized business, keeping an eye on these developments is a smart move. These AI tools are shaping up to be the next big thing that could change how we handle our day-to-day challenges and run our businesses and companies..

ChatGPT: The Game-Changer

Owner: OpenAI

Before ChatGPT came along, those of us excited about AI had already been experimenting with image creators and similar tools for a while. However, ChatGPT was the one that really showed everyone just how ready AI was to become a part of everyday life.

It didn’t take long after its release, in late 2022, for ChatGPT to attract a million active users, setting a record as the fastest app to ever reach this milestone. This record didn’t last long, though, as Meta’s Threads came along and broke it shortly afterward.

In the time since it first appeared, OpenAI hasn’t stopped making ChatGPT even more interesting. In 2023, they rolled out a Pro version that’s powered by their newest and strongest large-language model, GPT-4. They also added the ability to browse the web and create images with Dall-E, turning ChatGPT into a tool that can handle almost anything.

People often call ChatGPT the “do-anything-machine” because it’s so useful for a wide range of tasks. Even if ChatGPT can’t complete a task on its own, it likely knows how to guide you through doing it yourself. For many who have tried out all the different AI tools out there, ChatGPT stands out as the original powerhouse, leading the pack in versatility and reliability.

Google Bard (Gemini): The Challenger

Owner: Google
For a while, it looked like Google, the AI giant, was caught off guard by ChatGPT’s sudden rise. ChatGPT marked the first real challenge to Google’s stronghold over the search industry, which is a big part of where Google makes its money.

Then came Bard, Google’s answer to ChatGPT. It took a bit of time to launch and initially seemed like it couldn’t quite match up to OpenAI’s innovative generative AI chatbots. But, nearly a year after its debut, Bard has grown into something both useful and skilled.

Google has been more flexible with the technology behind Bard, switching up its models to enhance performance. It started with LaMDA, then moved to PaLM 2 to boost its coding and math skills. Recently, it shifted to Gemini Pro and is planning to upgrade to Gemini Ultra. Some say the newest version of Bard can do certain tasks even better than GPT-4, like understanding spoken words. It’s also been updated to create images using Google’s own Imagen 2 tech.

What sets Bard apart for many users is how well it integrates with Google’s other tools. If you’re already using Gmail, Workspace, Docs, and similar services, you’ll find Bard incredibly handy for drafting emails, writing documents, analyzing data, or streamlining everyday tasks.

Microsoft CoPilot: Your AI Assistant

Owner: Microsof

CoPilot is the name Microsoft has given to its premier generative AI chatbots, which initially made waves as a revamped version of its Bing search engine, known as Bing Chat. It wasn’t long before it carved out its own identity and was aptly renamed CoPilot, signaling its role as more than just a conversation partner — it’s here to assist.

Choosing the name “CoPilot” wasn’t a random decision. Microsoft aims to show that this AI is designed to support users across its suite of work and productivity applications, like Windows and Microsoft 365, striving to lead the AI space as it has in other areas.

Thanks to Microsoft’s substantial investment in OpenAI, it enjoys early access to cutting-edge technology for its products. The introduction of Bing Chat gave many their first taste of GPT-4, the latest and most capable large-language model that remains at the heart of CoPilot. And like ChatGPT, CoPilot is also capable of creating images with Dall-E.

CoPilot’s real game-changer, however, is how it brings AI into everyday tools used by millions. Whether it’s crafting spreadsheets, drafting documents, or writing code, CoPilot simplifies these tasks with straightforward language commands. It’s particularly popular among developers, thanks to its seamless integration with Github, another Microsoft-owned platform, revolutionizing how coding is done.

Llama2: Meta’s Open-Source Giant

Owner: Meta (Owner of Facebook, Instagram…)

Llama2 is Meta’s take on the AI revolution sparked by ChatGPT, but with a twist in its approach. Instead of rolling it out as a product for sale like Microsoft or OpenAI, Meta has opted for a more open route. By adopting a quasi-open-source model, Meta has made Llama2’s code and training materials freely available. This move allows anyone interested to develop their own generative AI chatbots. For those who aren’t coders but are curious about Llama2’s capabilities, it’s directly accessible through a dedicated URL.

Meta’s strategy is all about making Llama2 as user-friendly and accessible as possible. A big plus is the ability for users to set up private versions of Llama2 that operate without needing to send data back to Meta or rely on cloud services. This feature not only positions Llama2 as a versatile AI chatbot comparable to ChatGPT or Bard but also highlights its potential for crafting more tailored applications. Despite the presence of several open-source large language models (LLMs) in the market, Llama2 claims the top spot in performance based on Meta’s evaluations.

Meet Claude: Anthropic’s AI Innovator

Owner: Anthropic

Anthropic, founded by a group of former OpenAI experts, has brought Claude into the AI landscape. This multi-faceted generative AI chatbot is their first venture into creating a tool that can effortlessly interact through text, voice, imagery, and documents. Those who’ve used it commend its speed and intelligence, particularly highlighting its ability to produce clear and logical responses. While Claude might focus on a slightly narrower range of tasks compared to ChatGPT or Bard, its precision is noteworthy.

The team at Anthropic is deeply invested in the development of AI that is both ethical and transparent, a commitment encapsulated in what they refer to as Constitutional AI. This dedication has birthed a chatbot that excels in handling sensitive requests from users, perhaps even preventing unintentional ethical missteps. Claude is not only programmed to deny such requests but also to clarify its guidelines, justify its actions, and offer alternative, ethical solutions.

Debuting shortly after ChatGPT in early 2023, Claude quickly made a mark with its exceptional conversational abilities and its knack for picking up the subtle complexities in human communication. It also offers the unique feature of allowing users to customize its personality, making interactions not just productive but also enjoyable.
